The MAPPER consortium brings together the resources of nine participating institutions. The partners combine pan-European complementary research expertise covering all aspects of multi-scale applications in five different domains, high performance and distributed supercomputing, grid computing, grid services, software engineering, and operational expertise. We have succeeded in building a multidisciplinary consortium in which the resources, skills and knowledge necessary for realising the objectives of this collaborative project are well represented.

MAPPER will establish a partnership that is complementary in the following respects:

  • Multidisciplinary representation: in this project different types of organisations are represented; groups representing application fields and expertise in (multiscale) modelling and simulation, with three computing centres (PSNC, CYFRONET, LMU), bringing in a huge body of expertise in many aspects of software and services for simulations, and groups with expertise in distributed High Performance & Grid computing (e.g. UCL, UvA)
  • Skills and tools for research: The partnership in MAPPER includes the necessary skills, tools, knowledge and experience in the areas addressed and activities covered in this project. Important is to note that partners responsible for delivering the MAPPER computational science infrastructure have a strong track record in high quality software engineering, and are fully aware how to develop, deploy and distribute production quality software.

Some of the partners are involved in EGEE/EGI (CYFRONET, PSNC, LMU) or/and DEISA/PRACE (LMU, UCL). CYFRONET coordinates the Polish NGI (PL-Grid). Some of our partners play a leading role in user communities (Chalmers leads the EUFORIA project on Fusion, and is leader of the European Task Force on Integrated Tokamak Modelling; UCL leads the VPH Network of Excellence). UCL also has significant trans-Atlantic grid and HPC experience, and have been involved very actively in TeraGrid and with the US Department of Energy laboratories. All partners have a strong international standing in their respective fields, and are therefore well equipped to strongly disseminate the results of MAPPER in their circles.
